I see very few similarities between the switch to 32-bit hardware in 1986 and the switch to 64-bit hardware in 2003. Now, however, the 64-bit version of Linux is already being deployed on 64-bit x86 hardware and will soon be providing the "Gamestorm" game platform that is likely to deal a death blow to DirectX.

Fact is, you can still run and use the ORIGINAL ms-access version 1.0 (that is from windows 3.1, 16 bit environment) on brand new 32 bit pc windows box today. It will be *years* before a 64-bit version of Windows is ever in widespread use. The AMD processors will have to run Windows in 32-bit mode (with better performance than most current 32-bit processors, though) but the 64-bit capabilities will have to be implemented with Linux. If IA-64 fails, it won't be because you can't get your favorite OS or software on it :) AMD is just trying to do a 64 bit version of x86, and I don't think and it wasn't until Windows 95 was introduced (around the time of the Pentium 133) that the majority of x86 users were actually using it in 32 bit mode!

The 68000 had the same problem as the 6809, only for 32-bit integers instead of 16-bit integers; it also had a 16-bit ALU, which completes the analogy. This might seem nitpicky, but you should stick to this crufty layout if you wanted the option to someday optimize the code for a 64-bit version of your
